Previously there used to be a way to grow traffic to your blog:
- Publish every day.
- Build an audience and capture the attention of people through email and RSS subscriptions.
- Increase the “stickiness” of your message by the optimization for search engines.
The hard truth is that the age of a blog greatly determines its credibility and its value on the Internet. But that was before the media appeared.
Now, you have an advantage.
Now, you can start a blog today and tomorrow could be a success. It is no longer limited by the rule of “the oldest is better.” Now, you can use social networks in your favor, creating remarkable content and making it known in as many networks as possible, you will see that soon people will start sharing your information with you. This is, essentially, what I have done with my blog.
I had another blog that I had regularly published for over four years, progressively growing my audience by making small promises and fulfilling them. But over the course of a couple of months, this blog has positioned itself quite well and even exceeded the traffic of that old blog.
How do I do it?
It was simple. I wrote some articles where I knew people would share. I share relevant things and saw my social traffic was expanding.
It is not always easy, but on the other hand, it is not exactly space science either. If you share meaningful content and focus on a single theme, you’ll see good results.
If you’re wanting to use social media to drive traffic to your blog, here are eight ways to do it:
1. Get traffic on Twitter.
Start by following these tips from Twitter for beginners. And if it’s not on your blog, add the “tweet” button on all your blog posts.
2. Start a Facebook page for your blog.
This is an additional subscription option for Facebook users, and can be a means to expand their platform.
3. Share your content on Facebook regularly.
There are some excellent tools to help make this easier for you. Encourage your readers to do the same by adding a Facebook “like” or “sharing” on your blog.
4. Ask others to promote your blog.
Through social bookmarking sites such as DIGG, Stumbleupon, Reddit and others.
From time to time you can do it yourself, but be careful to do it repeatedly, some sites will penalize sites with multiple submissions from the same user.
5. Implement tools of social exchanges on its website.
An excellent tool is FLARE, you can combine buttons to share via email, Twitter, Facebook and social bookmarking pages.
6. Use a tool of social commentary
for your blogs like Disqus or IntenseDebate.
7. Write catchy headlines that people like to share.
Most people neglect this by publishing well – written articles with titles nondescript. Do not do that.
8. Write really engaging content.
The last point is emphasized again: create compelling content. If you want your blog to compete on social networks, you need to say something worth listening to. In other words, it must be impressive.
This is the negative side of social networks. Now everyone has a voice. Which raises the bet for those who want to communicate and be heard in this space. You have to be very specific or very radical. Maybe both.
